Dom Carter – What Marketing Transcript
What’s your name, position and where do you work?
My name’s Dom Carter, I’m the Director of What Marketing Company.
Describe your business in one sentence.
We are a social media and creative agency that develop campaigns and distribute them for our clients.
What separates you from the competition?
Usually, a lot of companies have videos produced and they put them out into the world wide web and they only get maybe 100 or 200 views and they’ve got this awesome video with hardly anybody seeing it. What we do, is we create the video and the content and then we use our social media knowledge and expertise to distribute it to our network and build audiences for them and their clients to be able to see it and really showcase their work.
What have been the highlights of your company so far?
We’re a start-up so I think the biggest highlight for us comes every time we signed a new client, especially when they are brands and the client is so much bigger than us. People that we couldn’t have actually imagined signing when we started out.
What qualities are needed to succeed in your industry?
In our industry it’s incredibly competitive. You need to remain unique. You need to have cutting edge skills that people want and I think as well it’s really important at the moment in Manchester especially is to be genuine and honest about the way you are approaching work.
Why do new businesses choose Manchester?
I think new businesses choose Manchester because it’s a thriving ecosystem. There’s lots of talent emerging. From our point of view, everybody within the networking environment is really friendly and there’s lots of good opportunities for anybody who’s got a really great idea to get their idea out there and distribute it amongst certain services whether its PR, Marketing or expert knowledge within that field.
Who are some local companies you would recommend?
There’s so many local companies in Manchester but if I had to name probably just one it would be Noir Agency based out of OGS Works. They’re really good at branding, they’re at a similar point in their timeline as a startup as we are at the moment.
Who do you think are the most influential people in the local business scene?
The most influential people in the business scene? If I had to name probably 3 it would be Naomi Timperley, it would be Richard Brown of Beastro and Johnny Caddon who’s putting together Business Rocks for the second year now.
Do you have any advice for new businesses in Manchester?
The advice I’d give to new companies or startups in Manchester are maybe stop talking so much about your ideas. If you’ve got a good idea then just go and do it, execute it and put it out there. If you don’t feel comfortable about your idea, it doesn’t matter. Put it out there and actually get feedback from the real product instead of walking around talking to everybody trying to gauge everybody else’s opinion when really the only person whose opinion matters is your own.
What’s the main benefit of working in Manchester?
The main benefit of working in Manchester is the accessibility, is the amount of networking events that are around, it’s the type of companies that are here and the amount of people you can bounce ideas off of.
Where are your favourite places to eat and drink in Manchester?
My favourite place to eat and drink in Manchester is Beastro located leftbank Spinningfields. They’ve got another restaurant opening up just opposite them. There’s free internet down there, fantastic food any time of the day and I know that Rich would kill me if I didn’t say it!
Thanks for watching, I’m Dom Carter from What Marketing Company and this is huddled.
