BigChiplogoMore than 20 companies from Greater Manchester will be competing in the 15th annual Big Chip Awards after being shortlisted for the prestigious North of England awards ceremony for firms excelling in the use of creative, digital and information technology.

Companies shortlisted for this year’s awards include; Cube3 Digital, which has been shortlisted for its project ‘MeeMee’ for both Best E-business Project and Best Use of Visual Design, while mobile app firm Apadmi, has been shortlisted for its BBC Radio iPlayer app for both Best Mobile Project and Best Application of Technology.

Stardotstar has been shortlisted in three categories at this year’s awards, in the running for the Big Chip Digital Agency Award, Best Not for Profit Project with ‘Made With Jam’, and Best Use of Gaming with its ‘Junior Vet Game for CBBC’, while online marketing agency PushON has been shortlisted in the Best Use of Search category for two of its projects, ‘Al Fresco Holidays’ and ‘Chill Factore’.

This year’s Little Chip Student Award, which welcomes digital innovation from students in further or higher education, sees BSc Web Development student James Mcavady, from Manchester Metropolitan University make the shortlist, following the university’s win in this category last year.

Code Computerlove, winners of last year’s Big Chip Digital Agency Award, have been shortlisted for the 2013 Best Not for Profit Project, with ‘Getting More People to Do More to Fight Poverty’ and ‘Behind the Brands’, which has also been shortlisted for Best Digital Campaign. The firm has also been shortlisted for Best Mobile Project for its ‘NUS Gets Extra Sales with Mobile App.’

No entries have been shortlisted for the The Big Chip OffBeat Award for Best Use of Social Media, as the judging panel felt that submissions did not meet the high standards required to be shortlisted for the Big Chip Awards.

The 2013 awards have attracted 246 entries from 127 digital and creative organisations and freelancers from across the whole of the North – the widest spread of entries to date.

This year there are 16 categories, including The Best Application of Technology Award which saw the highest number of entries of any category, and the Best use of Brand in Digital Award, a new category for the awards. Amaze with ‘Creating Amazing Online’ has been shortlisted for this category.

This year entrants were able to enter the Tasty Website award as a separate category, to be chosen by popular vote on the night using Twitter hashtags. The shortlist for this award will be announced in June.

The 2013 awards will be judged by an expert panel including new media pioneer and BBC technology journalist, Bill Thompson, Ajaz Ahmed, founder of Freeserve, Wired journalist Daniel Nye Griffiths, Liane Grimshaw from Click Consult, Emma Jenkins from giffgaff, Herb Kim from Codeworks, Jon Myers from Marin Software, games guru Thayer Prime, and Alasdair Scott from The Bright Place, and will be chaired by Michael Nutley, former editor-in-chief of New Media Age.

Organised by trade association Manchester Digital, with support from partners such as Digital Union in the North East, Leeds Digital Festival, Creative Sheffield and Creative Liverpool, the awards are open to any organisation based in the North that has designed or commissioned any digital projects in the past year.

This year’s awards will take place at the Palace Hotel in Manchester on June 27, and will be hosted by award-winning Irish comedian Andrew Ryan.

Shaun Fensom, Chair of the Big Chip Steering Group said: “As in previous years the judges have applied a strict and rigorous standard in selecting this shortlist – a reflection of the rising standards in the industry.

“This year we have a more diverse geographical spread of entries than ever, highlighting the broad range of digital sector talent we have in the North, and as always, it’s great to see new companies coming forward.”

The headline sponsor for this year’s Big Chip Awards is UK cloud and managed hosting provider UKFast. UKFast CEO Lawrence Jones said: “I am thrilled and honoured that UKFast is the headline sponsor of the Big Chip Awards. The North West is fast-becoming the most important digital hub outside of London, and awards such as these really showcase what we have to offer. The level of innovation, creativity and energy in the North is evident in this shortlist, and shows exactly why we are a region to be reckoned with.”

The Big Chip Awards will be announced at an awards dinner on 27 June 2013 at the Palace Hotel, Manchester. The awards’ progress can be followed on Twitter @BigChipAwards and with hashtag #BigChipAwards.
